Did you know that according to Gartner®, by 2024, companies that implement a cybersecurity mesh architecture (CSMA) that integrates security tools into an ecosystem will reduce the financial impact of individual security incidents by an average of 90 percent?

Now that we have your attention, let’s break down what CSMA is and why it matters to you and your clients.

What is Cybersecurity Mesh Architecture?

Traditional approaches to security architecture were designed for a previous generation of computing in which IT teams had physical control over their entire network. Thanks to digital acceleration and geographically distributed workforces, this approach is outdated.

Traditional point solutions are no longer a match for organizations’ expanded attack surfaces, increased network complexity and exposure to more sophisticated cyberattacks. Implementing a Cybersecurity Mesh Architecture (CSMA) is an architectural approach proposed by Gartner® that promotes interoperability between distinct security products to achieve a more consolidated security.

The Fortinet Security Fabric spans an organization’s entire network to protect its attack surface. All users, devices and applications receive the same high level of security, regardless of their location and across all network edges.

4 Steps To Jumpstart Your CSMA Journey

To successfully build a CSMA you must treat your security architecture as an ecosystem, rather than as a collection of siloed solutions. Gartner recommends that security leaders start by taking the following steps:

  1. Inventory the types of assets currently being protected.
  2. Assess the maturity of currently deployed security tools on the basis of integration capability, advanced analytics and real-time risk scoring.
  3. Survey your team’s capacity to perform an integration.
  4. Evaluate what level of investment is reasonable. Determine what your desired end state is and how long you are willing to pursue this journey before you see value.
